PORTRAITS FOR LIFE

Together Old in Italy

Together old in Italy – by Miki

Watercolour and ink travel sketch

I saw this old couple in Montepulciano, Tuscany, Italy in April 2011, while I was on my 2 months painting trip through Tuscany. I found the scene extremely poignant, full of symbolic about life and death and age and love…It was a big challenge to try to capture this moment, I did as good as I could to hide and draw. I added the colours some hours later when we came back to our Boomobile, our tour bus… well, it is not exactly a bus, bit is a big a motorhome, but we use it for my paintings tours, so i guess the name is appropriate… it sound so much cooler than “motorhome”!!!  :-)

Some years ago, I think it was in 2008, I did in Lisbon, Portugal a sketch of an old couple too, walking together in the street after shopping. That painting has received very much recognition since then, being featured in many places around the world, for example as magazine cover related to special themes about ageing , illnesses, etc…

Old Couple in Portugal – by Miki

I hope that my painting of an Italian couple getting olf together will have the same success.

The Children from Tahiti 04 – Very Young Maori Warrior

Very Young Maori Warrior from Tahiti - by Miki

Pastel and Colour Pencils

One more beautiful  child from Tahiti.

What fascinated me in this face and inspired me to paint it is the combative expression.

So young and such a warrior already!

This painting is available as well as original, but also as Giclee print, in different sizes and different formats, and also as greeting card  in my FAA Gallery:

People from Serpa in Portugal

Serpa 15 2009 S

After I had spent 2 or 3 days in Serpa sketching all kind of buildings, I got quite bored, and needed to sketch something else. This is why, on the 7th of July (2009), I sat with kevin at a cafe outside, and made sketches of the people sitting there. I liked the faces I saw, and had quite a nice time doing that. As always my sketches tend to be caricatures, I just can’t help it… but I swear that I have warm and sympathetic feelings towards all these people I sketch, my intention is really not to make them look silly or ridiculous or whatever negative… I am sorry if some recognise themselves (what i doubt in fcat as I am not really searching for a good likeness) and feel offended… :-)

Marc Pearson in BC SWEET

Marc Pearson BC SWEET S

(by Miki)

My name is Marc and I play Guitar and vocals for BC Sweet as well as managing the day to day affairs of the band. I’m a lucky guy. Many have said it, many more have thought it and I never forget it for one single day.

I am part of a fantastic band that rocks crowds across Europe. If someone had shown me a video of the BC Sweet of today compared to a few years ago, I would never have believed it. That statement is in NO WAY disrespectful to the wonderful people I have worked with in the band since I joined in 2000. It’s simply that today I have the best of all worlds, the best musicians as well as a wonderful chemistry on stage that is allowing the show to evolve and grow in a way I could never have hoped for.

I always wanted a band that the great Brian Connolly himself would have been proud of. I think, finally, I have that. BC Sweet is a solid and exciting unit performing the greatest hits of Sweet, keeping the songs alive for generations to come.

A BC Sweet show of today features all the hits of Sweet from the early bubblegum hits right through to the later more AOR type songs such as “Love Is Like Oxygen”. To all of you who spend your hard earned money travelling hundreds of miles sometimes, to come to our shows, or taking time to drop us emails and letters, we never take it for granted. Thanks for supporting BC Sweet, we love ya loads.”

Pete Phipps in BC SWEET

Pete Phipps S

(Actual BC SWEET’ s Drummer)

Pete Phipps is a founder member of The Glitter Band who had a string of hits in their own right through the 70s. The pounding drum intro to Rock and Roll Part 2 can still be heard in sports stadia all over the world every single weekend. Such is the power and legend of the “Glitter” sound.

During the 80s Pete worked with a string of amazing artists including The Eurythmics, Genesis’ Mike Rutherford and XTC.

Away from BC Sweet Pete not only teaches drums to the drummers of tomorrow but is one of the UK’s leading and most respected Tai-Chi instructors.

Hugh Laurie, by Miki - Brown Pencil and White Pastel, 60 x 50 cm, 2009

I still don’t know if I really like him as Dr. House, as I started watching the series in English without subtitles, and I had no chance to understand him! But last year I had a short personal story with one of the producers of the series, and honestly, I didn’t like it at all! Ask me if you want to know more…

Prints of this painting in many different sizes, on paper or canvas, and greeting cards are available directly on-line through my FAA Gallery. Click in the widget below and  it will lead you the place where you can purchase them

"Samson", by Miki - Pastel & Pencil, 65 x 50 cm, 2009

Just finished this portrait of one of my favourites actors, Michael J. Anderson, whom I discovered for the first time in the series “Carnivale”. I was seduced at once and always thought when I saw him:

“I wished I had such a little man as a friend…:

The Power of Daydreaming

Ink & Watercolour

Ink & Watercolour

For about 6 months now I have been in the process of moving.

Moving from one house into the other, from one art gallery into the other.

I hate packing. And believe me, the amount of painting materials and paintings I have is gigantic, so to move only this part of my past life is already a life’s work. This is why I decided to do it gradually, taking it easy. The Housing market in Spain being at a standstill, nobody is rushing to buy my lovely house, so I can take as much time as I need.

The other day I was there, about 260 kilometres north of here, and  I wanted to bring back my big new canvasses, which I ordered there before I left last Summer, but unfortunately they are so big that they don’t fit into the car. Frustrated,  I decided to bring back some of my older sketch books, and other little things.

Today, a little bit bored and without any energy to start some new stuff,  I had a glance at some of them, and found sketches which I of course had totally forgotten. This happens to me all the time by the way: I normally paint so fast and so prolifically that my paintings have no time to get recorded in my memory! Anyway, this is how I found this one. As I saw it, I remembered every detail again. A young girl had posed for me at that time for a fast sketch, and I remember how, a little bit annoyed by the boring position I had started to imagine things around her… and especially the cushions on the armchair, under her bum and behind her back had more and more taken the form of wings which seemed to grow from her body… and I even saw lots of butterflies flying all around her head!

A typical example of what suddenly happens to my brain when I get bored… I see things… bananas things…

some might call it the power of daydreaming!
